Just getting started?

If this is your first vegetable garden, we can help get it off the ground and growing.

1. Assessing your space and your desires

We’ll come assess your space, learn about you and your gardening goals, and make recommendations for the best layout/style. There are many options whether you want to start small or start big.

2. Prepare the beds

Depending on your space and aesthetic preferences, we build “traditional” beds, “no-dig” beds, raised beds and a variety of custom containers. Each type has its benefits and its own growing techniques. We find the best combination of these to suit your space and style.

3. Amend the soil

We are passionate (maybe obsessive) about soil and compost. Preparing the soil to receive plants is super important and we take great care in this crucial step.

4. Planting and maintaining

Getting plants started in the right way, at the right time, can be challenging. We work with you to help you master all the tricks of germinating, indoor propagation, timing, sowing, spacing, pruning, watering and protection. The goal here is to keep your plants happy, healthy and ensure a steady supply of vegetables all season.

5. Harvest time!

Being overwhelmed by an abundance of vegetables is the most wonderful problem in the world. We love making food as much as growing it, so we know what to do with this abundance. We teach the fundamentals of harvesting, preparation, storage, conservation and preservation. Enjoying the lush bounty of your garden in Spring, Summer and Fall is great, but enjoying it in February is miraculous!

Already growing?

You might benefit from some of these services:

  • Custom garden plans. Creating a customized, detailed growing plan that maximizes your produce and suits your lifestyle.
  • Selecting varieties. Finding the perfect hybrids or heirlooms that work best under your conditions.
  • Propagation. Starting your own seedlings is gratifying, economical and so much fun. We start in February, just when you think you can’t stand winter any more. No greenhouse needed!
  • Planting/sowing. Some people love being hunched over, sowing a 100 foot row of carrots. Some do not! We make tidy, happy work of getting seeds started and popping young plants in the ground.
  • Plant care. This is a big one. To keep everybody happy, a garden will need someone with knowledge of watering, fertilizers, pest/disease control, truss/trellis/support and weather-proofing.
  • Irrigation systems. Whether it’s a rain barrel and watering cans (our preferred method) or a fully automated drip irrigation system, finding the best method for a consistent water supply is critical.
  • Troubleshooting. Something is bound to go wrong and it’s not always easy to diagnose the issue. Luckily, with some experience, many problems have a remedy.
  • Maintenance/cleanup. Our garden maintenance work runs from February to December! There is always much to do: compost turning, mulching, weeding, pruning, irrigation, winterizing, plant training, repairs, etc.
  • Expansion/construction. This is the best part! At some point, you will be ready to expand. You may want more beds, a greenhouse, compost bays, poly-tunnel, storage shed, fence, walkway. We love building things that make your garden more efficient and beautiful.
